Love is a vital phenomenon that influences every aspect of our lives. Humans cannot thrive without loving relationships, even if all basic needs are met (Carter & Porges, 2013). Over the past few weeks, we have studied Paul’s words to the church at Corinth, as recorded in I Corinthians 13:1-13. As we approach the end of the chapter, Paul emphasizes that faith and hope are essential, but love is even greater. The Corinthians had focused too much on spiritual gifts as the means to achieve personal glory; however, these gifts are only meaningful when applied with love. Without love, they can even be toxic. Ultimately, spiritual gifts are essential for the church’s growth, but the gifts should always be seasoned with love.
